"There is no such thing as passive vision... only active envisioning, that is the creative constructing of a vision from a certain perceptual perspective." - Donald Kuspit

Painting from Memory

The road is a liminal space for you. One part being the love of a place left behind, the other being the love of a place you imagined it to be. The difference should be self evident, however, this mixed feeling, this liminal space, is the 'in between world' of the picture making process.

You dream, wake, drive, record, and then try to etch the experience in your mind. This reconnaissance trip, which is coming to an end soon, is hard to let go of. There is the note taking, several drawings, and numerous photographs executed along the way, but, as in past experience, the return home begins to dull the vividness of the journey. After a while it becomes a memory.

You will wait a few months and try to recollect the place in an oil on a substrate surface, but it is not the place you documented on the trip - the imagined world of memory now challenges your perception. A shed colour isn't right, and a type of aluminum siding is discordant - they are changed and removed from the painting. The work takes on a life of its own outside the slavish document of a brief encounter. It dawns on you that this is not just a picture you're making, but an ongoing moment.
